How To Get Rid Of Frogs

What would you rather have roaming freely in your backyard, frogs, insects or both? Certainly, we have our preferences and reasons, but when one or both become unwanted pests in your property, there is only one clarion call. Get rid of them. In reality, frogs feed on insects and, therefore, considered a necessary evil that helps cleanse your ponds and other water bodies in the vicinity. But as much as it makes sense to have frogs in your ecosystem, problems arise when they become too many for your comfort.

Frogs love to sing and they sing even more and louder during mating season. This kind of song can drive the neighborhood crazy. In addition, some frogs are poisonous and can kill house pets when they eat them. At this juncture, you must do the necessary – get rid of damn frogs. There are many methods to dispose of frogs. I know many nature lovers out there have started loathe me. But I want to be categorical; as things are, I have nothing personal against frogs. But let them thrive in their natural habitat, not in our backyards.

Before you embark in the killing mission, it’s important to familiarize with the frog species that you plan to deal with. Different frog species respond differently to the different methods deployed. It would also ascertain that you’re not doing anything illegal. In some states, certain frog species are protected by law. But this should not deter you from discouraging them from invading your property. You can mow the tall grass and trim shrubs and weeds in your compound. You can also seal and screening your windows and doors. Don’t also forget to empty pots and other containers littering your compound. Such elements provide good hiding places for frogs and breeding ground for insects.

Naturally, frogs love standing water. Indeed, where there is standing natural water body like a swamp, you will also find frogs. Not only does standing water bodies attract frog, but also insects like mosquitoes and other bugs, which are the staple diet for the frogs. So don’t be surprised to see an invasion of frogs, if in your compound you have both man-made and artificial ponds, bird baths, and other still water spots.

To help keep marauding frogs at bay, periodically empty standing the water. Always insist on fresh water, before any breeding of any sort takes place. If you insist these water spots in your backyard, you can have some pond technician fix some filter or a running fountain to your pond. In essence water will start circulating and in the process help get rid of mosquitoes and other insects that are food to the frogs. Even though frogs flood your water pond, but with no food, they will move on to the next place. I bet no frog wants to sleep on a hungry stomach.

You can also introduce natural predators in your compound to make a meal out of the frogs. Such predators like cats and snakes would fit the bill. Caution, though, confirm with your state laws to assert whether It’s allowed or not or you can physically catch the frogs using the butterfly net or any thinly-meshed net to capture the frogs and discard them wisely. Though this method is cumbersome, but it works. Once you capture the frogs you can relocate them to their natural habitat like a swamp. If you have nowhere to take the captured frogs you can decide to be humane and freeze them to death in a container.

You can also kill the tadpoles after catching them using an aquarium fishing net. Expose the tadpole out in the sun for a few hours and the dry heat will do the trick for you.

Ward off frogs from your property is one of a good idea by setting up plastic or mesh netting fences around the pond or house. The fence should start from the ground floor and stand some feet above the ground. This will keep the marauding frogs at bay as their leaps would be fruitless.

Snakes and frogs share most body characteristics. So if you have any snake repellent with you, you had better use it. You can spray the repellent in your backyard and it will have the same effect.

If all the above fails, you can go a notch higher and get rid of the frogs without mercy. The method used can also leave a lot of destruction in its wake. But if you don’t have the stomach to do it, you take leave and have the pest control guys do it for you. You can spray organic and chemical insecticides. However, most organic insecticides are not strong enough to kill the frogs.

But you’ll never go wrong if you spray the frogs directly with citric acid. To say the least, this method is very effective in the battle against frogs. Citric acid can easily be acquired from gardening shops. Even though, citric acid is known to damage some plants. If you love your plants you can rinse them with fresh water an hour or two after spraying.

Mixing water with salt and spray directly to the frogs, certainly, salt burns the frogs’ moist skin. You can also spray the salt water solution along the frog’s path and hiding places. Just like citric acid, salt water solution will also burn plants sprayed and in the process wilt away.

Bleach has also been used get rid of frogs. Though not devastating, but the effect is the same. On the downside, bleach is known to be hard on plants too as it most certainly kills them.

Of course, we love our coffee, but when we drink concentrated coffee, our hearts tend to beat much faster. Imagine what concentrated caffeine would do to the poor frogs. Concentrated caffeine kills frogs by causing them heart attacks. You can use this method by spraying concentrated caffeine where frogs congregate. Imagine yourself inside a gas chamber whose doors are wide open. The intense discomfort will make bolt in a hurry, never to come back. The same applies to frogs.
